One tomb of nine.

SUNSTONE is an 8-bit action-adventure in the 1988 shape: a game world of single screens, a sword, a bag of tools, a boss under every roof, and secrets in the walls. This demo is the first and shortest tomb, THE HOLLOW, start to finish. The prologue, every room, both hidden cellars, the boss, its Sunstone, and the clue that points at the next roof. It runs right here in your browser. Nothing to download.

The full game comes to Steam on November 11. If the Hollow gets its hooks in you, a wishlist genuinely helps a small studio get seen: Wishlist SUNSTONE on Steam.

What's in the demo

  • THE HOLLOW, whole: every room, both hidden cellars, the boss.
  • The prologue and the first story beat.
  • A battery save. Close the tab, come back later, press CONTINUE.
  • Keyboard or gamepad. Plug one in and press any button.

What's in the full game

  • A whole game world in screens: woods that close in, barrows gone dark, a burned vale, a lake shore.
  • Nine tombs and eight Sunstones.
  • Bombs, a bow, a lamp, a raft, keys, and the drawer that holds them.
  • A second quest that moves the secrets, and lies about a few of them.

Controls

Move: arrows or WASD · Sword: Z or J · Item: X or K · Start: Enter or Space · Stories and clues: Tab · F fullscreen · M mute · C tint · V glass · P pause · R power cycle. A gamepad works too.

Notes

Made by Quorum, the same small studio behind Veil of Time and Bush League Baseball. Every sprite is ASCII in a source file and every note is arithmetic; the game loads no image or sound files. Best in a desktop browser. Your save lives in this browser's storage, so it stays on this machine.

If something breaks, or you get stuck, say so in the comments. We read them. Thanks and Enjoy!
